A Growing Gallery

Carolyn Arnold was John English's secretarial assistant for many years. She discovered most of these photos. If you can add to them please do so by sending them to me by e-mail with a short description.

Thanks to Sister Betty Berrigan, CSJ
(third from the right second row)
this is a photograph
of the participants and facilitators
in the institute
that started it all --
the 1969 May/June Institute
Of Practical Asceticism.

These persons led the 1970 Institute.
I think it was the second
May/June Institute.
We only had the one secretary
who worked beyond the call of duty.
I think that this was the first of many
institutes for John Haley.
Joe Frechette was in charge of maintenance.
From left to right: John Veltri, John English, John LeSarge, Gibson Hallam, Valeria Zaduk,
Michael Kyne, Joseph Frechette, John Haley,
+Attila Mikloshazy.
Here are the participants of the same
1970 institute.

The participants of the 1999 Symposium that celebrated John's 50th Anniversary as a Jesuit.
I remember meeting him in the novitiate
50 years earlier.
He was my "secundi" and
I was his primi (novitiate jargon).
Sorry for the lack of clarity
in the accompanying enlargement.

Everyone was assigned to a table during the process of the Symposium
(created in large part by
Jim Bowler and Elaine Frigo).
This grouping with John English
was part of his table.
They are from left to right
Erik Oland, Peter McIsaac, Gordon Rixon,
Chris Mara, Bertrand Djimoginan,
Meg Lavin, John Costello, Kathleen Flynn,
John English, Kathleen McAlpin.

At some point during the symposium,
George Leach (bottom right) convened a meeting of a special little in-group of Jesuits.
By the way, Jim Bowler is the upper left.
standing next to him are Roger Yaworski,
Bernie Carroll, Gary Smith, and
Gerard Hughes.
Seated and moving to the left from George Leach are Erik Oland, Myself, Bill Creed.
