This volume contains a number of helps for prayer in different settings
In the Christian tradition meditative prayer includes a variety of ways by which a person disposes oneself to the influence of God's spirit. Many of these ways include the use of the scriptures of both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible. Ignatian spirituality, through the instrumentality of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, has been one of the channels of this tradition. This handbook, written from the perspective of that tradition, has proved very useful in helping people to open their hearts to the mystery of God.
This volume is designed for persons who accompany others in their inner journey, especially in the context of the Spiritual Exercises.
With the same external design (8.5 inches x 6.5 inches bound with plastic rings) as the popular Orientations, Volume 1, this new manual attempts to bring together that oral tradition of 30 years which supported the use of the Exercises in many of its practical applications such as in the Notation [19] Spiritual Exercises journey, ongoing spiritual direction, shorter directed prayer formats, etc. Together the two parts comprise 651 pages, including study helps, glossary and index. This new manual is designed to be used while one is actually giving spiritual direction and/or to be used in classrooms and training sessions. It contains the collected wisdom of contemporary spiritual guides who have based their art and skill of spiritual guidance on the long tradition of the Exercises and on the discoveries of our current culture.
